Description:
A good straight sided 1 quart measure by Thomas & Townsend Compton of London, who worked 1802-1814.
The measure has a plain straight sided body with a large curve handle with thumb rest, attached to the body with a large escutcheon. There is a WR Crown verification to the left of the handle and a clear makers mark inside the base.
The front of the measure is engraved in large script, 'Gilcomston Brewery 12'. Gilcomston Brewery was in Aberdeen Scotland.

Description:
A good one quart tankard, Old English Wine Standard capacity; bearing the mark 'TB' believed to be Thomas Bankes of Wigan, England who worked 1706-1724.
The straight sided body has a low single fillet and stands on a slightly flared foot. The double dome lid has a ram's horn thumbpiece, the curve handle has cut-card decoration to the top and a boot-heel terminal. The inner base is clearly marked with the makers mark for 'TB'.

Provenance:
Sold Bonham's 22.01.2015 as lot 158.
Bonham's state that the old paper label and marked No.6 may refer to Christopher Peal.
The are other numerous collector's labels attached to the base.

Description:
A large and scarce tankard by Richard Going of Bristol, England; who worked 1715 - 1764. The tankard is of unusually large size having a capacity of 46floz, this would be over two and a half pints to the Old English Wine Standard.
The tankard is straight sided with a low fillet to the body which stands on a slightly flared foot. The double dome lid has a scroll thumbpiece, the heavy curved handle has a large fishtail terminal. The inside base bears the mark of Richard Going.
Richard Going was a prominent Bristol maker and exported on a regular basis to America. His shop was in Broad Quay, Bristol and is shown in the lower right hand corner of the painting by Peter Monamy; which is displayed in the Bristol City Museum. (see image attached).

The measure is of ‘U’ shaped form with a single banded fillet to the body. The double dome lid has an open chair back thumb piece; the handle is double scroll with fishtail terminal. The measure stands on a large flared foot.
The hall marks of Samuel Cocks are found to the left of the handle. There are no verification marks.
The condition is excellent with a polished silver grey finish; there are some traces of oxide.

A fine tankard with double dome lid, bulbous drum with fillet on a large flared foot.

Double scroll handle with fishtail terminal.

The hinge to the lid looks to be original with no repair.

There are rubbed makers marks to the left of the handle.

I have measured the capacity and it is about 33 fl oz; so 1 quart to the Old English Wine Standard.

The tankard has a polished silver grey finish, there is possibly a repair to the handle terminal (see detailed images).

A good straight sided 1 quart measure by Henry Fothergill of Bristol, who worked 1819-1845.
The measure has a straight sided body with a low fillet, standing on a raised flared foot, giving the measure extra height. The handle is of unusual form with a depressed thumb rest at the upper terminal.
The measure has a full set of makers hallmarks and label to the left of the handle, along with a 'Imperial' label. The inside base bears a clear makers mark.

Verification marks:
The measure has an excellent 'Cornwall County' shield verification, which is the County arms of a shield of 15 bezants. There is also a inspectors mark 'JP', which is either John Parkin of Lostwithiel or Josiah Phillips of Redruth.

This is a very well made and heavy measure. There are no verification marks but there is a clear makers mark to the inside of the base.

Description:
A charming 1 pint tavern mug of squat U shape standing on a large flared foot with a double scroll handle with fish tail terminal. The plain body is inscribed with the ownership initials 'DM' to the front, the lack of verification marks would suggest that this mug was for private use.
The mug has makers marks to the left of the handle; the three lion passant marks are attributed to M Alderson & Co who worked 1821-1832, but could also be attributed to earlier Alderson businesses. The inside of the base has a very faint makers mark of an 'A'; this is also attributed to a number of Alderson businesses. The likelihood is that this mug was made either by M Alderson & Co or Mary Alderson 1792 -1821.

The inside of the base has the mark of W R Loftus of 321 Oxford Street, London. The base is inscribed with the following: Lord High Admiral, Church Street. The front of the measure also bears the initials FR.
The Lord High Admiral public House was in Church Street, Lisson Grove, London. It was built in 1841 and rebuilt in 1960.
It is recorded that in 1891 - 1895 Frederick Ritchie was the publican.

Description:
A brass rim measure of 1 pint Imperial capacity, the measure has a cylindrical body with ovolo banding just above the lower handle terminal. The measure has verification marks stamped either side of the handle on the brass rim. The inside of the base has a partial mark for W R Loftus Ltd of 321 Oxford Street, London. Brass rim measures are considered to have been used to measure shell fish and dry produce.

Verification marks:
Cr ER 183 Essex.
Cr ER 2 London City.

Condition:
Excellent condition with a polished silver grey finish and some small traces of light oxide.

Repairs: There are no repairs that I could detect.

Antique English pewter plain tulip shaped 1 pint tankard or measure with broad flared foot; double scroll handle with fishtail terminal.
Verification marks to the left of handle, VR49 for Westmoreland County; Appleby District, and also marked 1EWW for East Ward and PINT. There is an X to the inside of the base, but no makers’ marks.
The tankard is in excellent condition with a polished silver grey finish. There are no repairs or damage.

Antique English pewter 1 pint measure of truncated cone form, standing on a flared foot, there is a fillet to the body and some incised banding.
The measure is clearly marked to the front with an excellent Liverpool verification mark and has a ‘George 1V IMPERIAL PINT’ stamp to the front.
The makers mark, ‘MORGAN’ is inside the base.
The condition is excellent with a dull grey polished finish.

Antique English pewter half pint measure by John Abbot of Gateshead. A very solid and well made measure.
There is a ‘1/2 PINT’ capacity label to the front of the rim, there are no verification marks.
The inside base has the Abbot mark within two circles.
The front of the measure is engraved with the initials ‘JB’.
The measure is in good condition with signs of use, it retains a natural silver grey patina.

Circa 1860.

Antique English pewter 1 quart measure with brass rim. A very solid and heavy measure.
There is a ‘1 QUART’ capacity label to the left of the handle, along with numerous verification marks.
The front of the measure is engraved as is the underside of the base with owners name and the name of the Inn where it was used.
The measure is in fair condition with many signs of use, it retains a natural grey patina.

Antique English pewter two handled ‘loving’ cup of 1 pint capacity. The cup stands on a flared foot with large strap handles, each with four heavily incised lines, the upper and lower terminals of the handle are of a ‘Y’ form.
There are clear maker’s marks to the rim; there are no capacity verification marks.
The condition is good, there are traces of a repair to the lower handle terminal, and the cup is a polished silver grey with traces of oxide.
